The road to the unknown
When I decided to work less hours a week in 2015 in order to start a business of my own in addition to my permanent job in the graphics industry, I could not have imagined that my ideas would grow into what Mikxs is today. I started my search from scratch. I had no idea what I wanted to do, but only knew that I wanted to be creative and sincerely wanted to help people. But who was waiting for my help?
After a search of 1.5 years, I concluded: The cultural sector is not accessible for people with a visual and/or hearing impairment, and I want to change that. After many conversations with organisations, experts and visits to events, conferences and even a training course in the UK, I laid the foundation for a training course. A training to teach museum teachers how to let people with visual impairments experience art in a museum. This resulted in my first project at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 2017. They were the first museum where I was able to put my training into practice; and with success.
Experience is central to everything I do.

During the workshops and training I pay a lot of attention to awareness. By letting my students experience with simulation glasses what it is to experience art with a visually impaired. Or by letting them communicate without words, they experience for themselves what is missing to really enjoy art. Sharing stories from experienced blind or deaf experts during our visit to a client, or letting the experts themselves tell their story, always is an eye opener. Helping a customer on their way to serve this special group of visitors better, gives me energy.
Expansion of the team
The demand for my services is now growing. And although I am self-employed full time now, I can no longer do it all by myself. That is why I have gathered several people around me which I can deploy when my agenda is getting too full. We can also tackle projects together to work even more efficiently.
In addition, I regularly connect my clients with experts who are specialized in specific accessibility aspects such as accessible websites, route guidance, audio tours or tactile materials. Only together can we achieve the best results.

Our team is ready for anyone who wants to make a difference in an accessible cultural experience for people with a visual and/or hearing impairment. From the small neighborhood museum around the corner to the larger institutions; we are happy to help everyone.
